1 Feb 2021 – already -10°C at Altnharra at 19 UTC

A small cold cell of high pressure has been evident on the occasional chart over the last few days or so across northern Scotland thanks to the low temperatures, and it’s cold again tonight, particularly over Sutherland, where Altnaharra is already a fraction off -10°C at 19 UTC. With the lower dewpoint air that should be plenty of time to break the coldest night of the winter recorded of -13°C recorded at Braemar over the weekend, that is of course if the gradient doesn’t increase any more and break the inversion down or low cloud drifts down from the northeast. Things have to be just perfect if you want to break a record.
