The heatwave across Siberia in the last month has had a serious knock on effect on sea ice in the Laptev Sea and hence the total Arctic sea ice extent at the moment (11 July) it is at record low levels of 7.819 million square kilometers, that’s 79.2% of the LTA. It’s been running neck and neck with last year sea ice extent since late spring. I have also read that persistent high pressure across parts of the Arctic Ocean has also contributed to the sharp decline in sea ice more generally since mid June.
