19-20 January 2021 – Radar rainfall estimates

Estimated accumulations from weather radar

Some white pixels are showing up over the highest ground which indicates 26 hour totals of precipitation well in excess of 80 mm which in that time period is high but not unheard of. There are four separate warnings in force for heavy rain at the moment from the UKMO, three yellow and one amber overlaid on top of a yellow. The amber warning looks to me to be more of an attempt at a flood warning (even though the UKMO don’t issue flood warnings) rather than one for rain because of the odd area that it covers. There’s another batch of rain connected with a second low centre that’s now spawning south of Ireland at the moment which has been pepping up the rainfall again across central parts overnight. Here are a couple of pseudo hyetographs for Kinder Scout and Snowdon.
