8 Feb 2021 – Ranked extreme temperatures, snow depth & wind chill

Who said Alexander Buchan was wrong with his table of singularities? We are into day two of his first cold spell, and at least for the year 2021 he looks like he got it spot on. The coldest low level station overnight was Altnaharra with -7.5°C and the snowiest Aboyne with 26 cm of snow, even though just up the road Braemar may have double that amount. The highest wind chill was close to -19°C on the tops of the Cairngorms, although Wattisham has a very creditable wind chill of -10.7°C at 07 UTC, best of luck to whoever is doing the water equivalent estimates at 09 UTC down there this morning.
