It looks like it will be a cold and wintry Hogmanay for 2021 across IONA. The weather continues to be rather cold, rather than just plain cold, and it’s never quite cold enough to guarantee snow everywhere, inland at least. A real nightmare for forecasters who have to decide if the NWP model that they rely on so much is giving them good guidance, or leading them up the garden path. So far during this festive break forecasters don’t seem to have been doing at all well, and weathercasters have now reverted to using terms such as wintry showers, or showers with a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow to cover any eventuality. This mornings snow across northern Scotland is a good example of how they’ve mishandled not only the forecast but also the warnings that go along with it.
