The highest wind speeds yesterday from storm Atiyah were around the coast of southwest Ireland. It was certainly a windy 24 hours across Eire with gusts close to 80 mph around the coast, with a gust of 92 mph reported by weather buoy 62023 just of the south coast. The yellow warning area issued by the UKMO was peppered with gusts of 50-60 mph, but so too were many other coastal stations around the UK yesterday and overnight. All in all another unmemorable storm to add to a growing list of unmemorable storms, we should really divorce the naming of storms from the warnings process.
This animation does show a couple of embedded troughs running southward down the west and east coasts of Scotland which did tighten the gradient but not overly so.
