Amber warning issued – now Francis is a pukka storm!

Someone down at EX1 must have been reading the criticism I made yesterday regarding named storms always being linked with the issuing of an amber and not a yellow warning for wind. The reason I say this is the Met Office now seem to agree, and have just upped the warning level for storm Francis to amber for most of Wales and a swathe of the central Midlands from 14 BST today for strong winds. One small point and that is – weren’t amber strong wind warnings of old >70 mph or more? The only 70 mph is this warning is the upper limit for the exposed coastal regions, and the Met Office probably know full well that there have been a few gusts in excess of that from the non-standard sites at the Needles and Berry Point already.
