April 2021 – Pressure and circulation

April 2021 was a very unusual month as far as pressure and North Atlantic circulation went with a massive +14 hPa anomaly to the northwest of IONA combined with a -6 hPa anomalies close to the Azores which effectively pushed the Azores high northeast and leave IONA in a mean anticyclonic NW’ly flow. That explains the dry month, and because it was a cold high that often sat in Arctic air that explains the relatively clear skies by day making it the sunniest April on record, and the clear skies by night that made it the frostiest on record. As you can see from the barogram for NE Scotland pressure was well above average for much of the month.
