April, come she will, when streams are ripe and swelled with rain

Despite what the Simon and Garfunkel and lyrics say in their lyrics, April 2021 has been a dry affair across IONA at least in the first half of this month, and particularly so across the southeast of England. There’s nothing too exceptional about the lack of rainfall in the southeast this month because April occasionally can turn out to be an exceptionally dry month as the record shows. The driest on record was in 1893, when only 1.5 mm fell according to the gridded data series for the region, and two very very dry April’s occurred as recently as 2007 and 2011.
