Cool weather this weekend

So it’s going to be a cool weekend then is it Chris Fawkes – a cool weekend in January – I ask you! I don’t know which of the male weathercasters I dislike the most at the BBC at the moment there are so many to choose from. Gone are the days when you had likable people such as John Hammond and Alex Deakin on the rosta. As an outstation observer I worked with quite a few trainee forecaster coming of their Initial [IFC] or Advanced forecasting courses [AFC] for further training, but a 12 hours shift with one or two of these characters would have been a challenge.

  1. Well he’s right, it IS cooler than he expected !

I remember the ‘experts’ telling us –
“children won’t know what snow is”, Dr. David Viner
“Climate may turn UK Mediterranean” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4091068.stm
“New York underwater by 2018” James Hanson 1988

    1. Yes I think it may have been the same so called expert that said all Arctic sea ice would be gone by 2015 some years ago.

  2. No that was wacko Wadhams
Peter Wadhams, a ‘professor of ocean physics’ at Cambridge University, said that in a prediction he made in 2008 also in -10/11/12/13&14; then he changed it to “soon”.

  3. What a misleading couple of posts.

Firstly,I don’t think Dr David Viner said sea ice would be gone by 2015 but, (to show me as being wrong) if he did say that lets see he words in print here please.

    Then:

“I remember the ‘experts’ telling us –
“children won’t know what snow is”, Dr. David Viner
“Climate may turn UK Mediterranean” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4091068.stm
“New York underwater by 2018” James Hanson 1988″

Dr Viner also said (nb, in 2000) “We’re really going to get caught out. Snow will probably cause chaos in 20 years time.”. Looks like he could be just a year out…

The BBC article was from 2005 and says “Huge swathes of England could take on a Mediterranean look within 50 years” so it is talking about 2055 not 2021…

And, as far I can can find out, Dr Hansen did no say what you quote him saying – though you might be able to find someone who says he did…

  4. @Peter
“Firstly,I don’t think Dr David Viner said sea ice would be gone by 2015”
    Correct he didn’t.
Even David Viner wasn’t daft enough to make such a stupid claim; that was wacko Wadhams who also claimed that assassins may have murdered three British scientists investigating the impact of global warming & he is on a hit-list !!!

According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event”.

“Children just aren’t going to know what snow is,”

James Hanson as reported in ‘The Salon’

    Hope that helps
