Coronavirus and the MOSAiC expedition

In my last post about the MOSAiC expedition I thought that it might be cut short because the ice pack they were locked into in the Arctic north of Svalbard might become unstable and break up, never thinking that a global pandemic like Coronavirus might come along that could cause it to be curtailed. They seem to be prepared to soldier on at the moment though, but the future of the project is looking a bit fraught as far as I can see. In the last ten days warm air pushed up from the south, as you can see from my thermograph of hourly observations from the Polar Stern, and raised temperatures briefly above 0°C on the 19th of April.
