December 2020 – weather summary

Data and images courtesy UKMO

It was certainly dull in Ross-shire during December 2020 with only 50% of the average sunshine, in contrast in nearby Caithness sunshine was over 130% of average. They look slightly odd, but when you consider the small amounts of sunshine we get up here in December, with sunrise at around 9am and sunset at 3.30 pm, just a couple of sunny/cloudy days will skew the results. As far as I know there are comparatively few AWS or climate stations with sunshine sensors across the country, and I would have thought these charts may have been enhanced with estimates from satellite imagery perhaps. My auto headline for the whole of the UK for the month reads “Near average temperatures, wet with near average sunshine”, the wording is pretty dreadful, but it just about sums it up.
