Explosive deepening of Storm Alex

It looks like Meteo France are not being rushed into naming Friday’s low storm Alex, so the Met Office are being forced to play the waiting game, even though the low is forecast to undergo explosive deepening (999 hPa at 01-1200 to 964 hPa at 02-0600) in the latest run of the ECMWF Hi-res model, as it moves swiftly through the Bay of Biscay tracking northeastward into the northwest of France during Friday.

In the meantime the UKMO not to be outdone have issued a cover all yellow warning for wind and rain for Friday for southern coastal counties. I must say these rainfall totals of 40-50 mm for Friday do look a little on the conservative side when compared to the totals for the weekend as a whole.

If you’ve booked yourselves into a B&B in Bournemouth, the prospects of a nice quiet autumn break this weekend don’t look too promising.
