Feb 2021 – Global temperatures

I have waited till the 22nd of March in the hope that the latest February from Berkeley would be published. Unfortunately I am still waiting as I am for the values from the JMA and the HadCRUT series. The HadCRUT series now has now moved to version 5 but they still don’t seem to be able to produce values for January or February with it yet. Of the three series that have reported the 12 month average anomalies have continued to fall back in February. I’ve heard that some people feel that the decline is due to La Niña but in my DIY global temperature series I noticed the down tick in 12 month averages had already started in March of 2020. It may just be me, but I have noticed that when global monthly temperatures are not record breaking they are slower to be published, usually four of the big six are available by the second week of the month. It does remind me a little of the song sung by various football supporters from the terraces “You only sing when you’re winning”.

“The GMST reconstruction is also needed to place recent global climate change into the longer-term context of natural climate variability.”
“For the global reconstruction, 100% of the ensemble members show a cooling trend, with an average rate of −0.08 °C per 1000 years”
