Fly in the ointment…

Rainfall estimates 1800 UTC 27 May to 0825 UTC 28 May 2020

It may have been “a very weak weather front” according to Darren Bett, in yesterday’s evening weather forecast on the BBC, but this fly in the ointment did produce a fair amount of rain across the north of Scotland, typically away from high ground of 4-8 mm. The estimates of the overnight rainfall look quite a bit higher than the ECMWF hi-res model suggested it would be, particularly across the high ground of both Wester Ross and eastern Sutherland, and the model was correct in picking out some pockets of heavy rainfall embedded in it as you can see from the weather radar image for 2355 UTC.
