The reasons why northern Scotland saw its coldest January since 1985 are self evident when you look at the mean pressure charts for January. Higher than average pressure to the north and immediately to the west of Iceland (+16 hPa) combined with lower than average pressure close to the Azores (-10 hPa) and across central Europe, shifted the Icelandic low eastward into the Norwegian sea, and through the month saw a mean flow from the northwest across Scotland.
