January 2020 – circulation

The mean pressure chart for January 2020 clearly shows why it was the 5th mildest January in the UK since 1884. Below average pressure (-15 hPa) persisted close to Jan Mayen and above average pressure (+7 hPa) centred over Italy squeezed and tilted the southwesterly flow cross the Atlantic. The southwesterly flow this produced pulled warm air from the Azores region, and was so strong that it pushed this mild air towards Finland and right into the heart of continental Russia for much of the month.
