Kicked and dragging into winter

The cold northerly I blogged about yesterday that looked like it would affect the country next weekend looks likely to arrive much earlier in the latest model runs, possibly as early as Thursday across the north of Scotland, as a ridge of high pressure extends southward from the north on Friday. As you will well know NWP is far from precise at this range (T+156) and things will more than likely change again during the coming week, but the trend does look for a short lived cold spell with northerly winds. I say short lived because by the weekend the deeper colder air has retreated away to Scandinavia but the ECMWF does suggest it will remain rather cold and wintry in the north across the mountains out to T+240.
