MOSAiC misses the Pole

It looks likely that the Polar Stern and the MOSAiC expedition are not going to quite reach the North Pole. They are close, but the drift in the Arctic Ocean and the current weather conditions looks likely to take them southward towards Spitsbergen. The SYNOP observations from the ship at the moment puts it at 88°30″ north, so I reckon they are around 90 nautical miles away from the North Pole. The latest observations show an incursion of milder air (-9.4°C) on the 20th which they reckon was caused by our two recent named storms Ciara and Dennis in the North Atlantic. The coldest temperature so far of -38.2°C occurred on the 1st of February.
