Overnight precipitation totals across Scotland

Precipitation accumulations from weather radar

Estimates from weather radar suggest that the wettest spots across northern Scotland have received 50 to 60 mm in the 24 hours ending 09 UTC this morning. Some parts of the northwest Highlands have deeper purple pixels indicating totals of 70 to 80 mm either that or the sound of heavy metal reverberating from the mountain tops. Although the UKMO yellow warning for heavy rain was only valid from 18 UTC yesterday till 21 UTC today, it’s apparent that it doesn’t extend far enough west to cover the whole of the northwest Highlands. The rain shadow effect obviously doesn’t work that well when in reverse i.e east to west and nature abhors straight lines or so they say.
