There are many methods or strategies that you can use to rank your climate or observational data. In all of the many applications I have written over the years it seems I have always use the dense ranking method, I don’t know why I just always have. It’s described in this page I’ve copied from Wikipedia, which lists five of the most popular methods of ranking.
