Storm naming game gets even more farcical

The Spanish Met Service AEMET have surprised everyone in naming this weekend’s low storm Jorge, which as far as I can see won’t impact Spain with much in the way of severe weather at all. The Met Office and Met Eireann had both been dragging their heels about naming the severe low storm Ellen, which I suggested they did yesterday on the strength of the NWP, so the Spanish decided they’d do it for them! What an absolute farce this naming of storms has turned into these days, I don’t know if I want to condemn what the Spanish have done or applaud them for highlighting just how silly and ridiculous the whole thing is.

It looks to me like the UKMO had passed on making it a named storm – for some strange reason known only to the great Oz – they will have presumed that Met Eireann would have issued an orange alert first thing today which would have triggered naming it storm Ellen, for whatever reason Met Eireann procrastinated about it which let the Spanish in.
