The recent cold spell in central Russia

It never fails to astound me how heatwaves and higher than average temperatures always seem to garner much more attention in social media than colder than average temperatures ever do in summer. Take for example the recent heatwaves in the Siberian Arctic compared to the very cold July that we’ve just seen in central Russia (anomalies -10°C). Very little mention if any of this cold spell, but a never ending cacophony of news items about the wildfires, melting permafrost and sea ice in the social media regarding Siberia. Here’s my bit to try and redress the balance, not many people live in that part of the world but it certainly has been cold.
