The winter warmth in Helsinki and Moscow

I still can’t believe just how exceptionally mild it’s been in Scandinavia and western Russia so far this winter, and just to reaffirm that to myself I’ve added some extra functionality to my climate application to enable me to look back and examine the daily temperature and anomaly records for both Helsinki and Moscow. This has help me feel more confident in the chart that I produced of anomalies in Europe for the first 22 days of January. It seems to me that the exceptional mild temperatures seem to have gone largely unnoticed by any of the media in the UK.

The graph for Moscow airport does look a little weird, this maybe because they report their extreme temperatures at 06 and 18 UTC rather than three hours earlier for their time zone. Anomalies in the graphs by the way, are with respect to the 1961-1990 LTA.
