We are just over month away from the minimum and Arctic sea ice is still at a record low for this time in early August. The big question is will the extent slide away like it did in the summer of 2012? Or will take a shallower trajectory and avoid a new minimum? At the moment the signs aren’t good if you believe the thoughts of Ruth Mottram of the Danish Meteorological Institute in this mornings Guardian. Back in the first week of August 2012 sea ice extents took a nosedive, and the next week will be crucial in seeing if we are heading for a similar one in 2019.
