Winter 2019-20 fifth stormiest since 1871

Although there were only five named storms in the winter of 2019-20 [DJF] as far as I can see, the mean gale index of 30.1, as calculated in the objective Lamb weather data series by the CRU at the UEA, was the fifth highest since 1871 when the series started. There were stormy spells in early December 2019, early January and particularly through the month of February 2020 when three of the five storms were occurred. Looking at the analysis it appears that although there weren’t too many exceptionally ferocious storms there were comparatively few low wind speed days. The data is rather crude because it is based on only the 12 UTC observation each day, rather than at all four main observational hours.
