The NSIDC reckon that Arctic sea ice extent for January was the sixth smallest on record and 6.5% below the long term average. Well on the 11th of February I made it just 4.3% below average and only the 13th lowest in the series. They must take an average for the entire month, and it wasn’t doing well in the New Year which probably accounts for low ranking. I download the daily data they produce, and to my mind I thought Arctic sea ice was holding up rather well this year and is tracking very close to last years extent.
