A quick look at temperatures and anomalies at 12 UTC on the 1st of January 2020 just to give an idea of just how cold it is at the moment across the country. The coldest areas have been in southern counties of England today. Slightly milder air that has been heading down in the northerly flow across the UK for the last 36 hours has yet still to make it here. Conversely the slightly milder that spread down across Scotland yesterday is gradually being replaced with slightly colder air from the north. We took a walk this afternoon, and the mountains look resplendent in their white mantle of snow and the slight drop in temperature through the day has put a sparkle and glaze to the melted snow cover. I still find it hard to believe that there are no severe weather warnings in force at all for the overnight period, perhaps that’s it conditions are just not severe enough, although some side roads and pavements through our village do resemble a sparkling skating rink late this afternoon.
