May 2021 – Very wet in Wales drier in north

May was a wet month. It was particularly wet across Wales and the southwest, but much drier across the north. According to my stats Capel Curig in Wales was the wettest place in May with 262 mm which is no big surprise. The highest anomaly of 309.6% of average was at Bala also in the Snowdonia National park. Aultbea in Wester Ross had the lowest anomaly of just 57.3% of the LTA.

  1. I like your maps of obs from various stations across the UK. But as regards rainfall over a month, obviously your algorithm does not cater for missing obs.
The Plymouth May rainfall is given as 84 mm. Much less than surrounding places. Plymouth Mount Batten AWS went AWOL for a few days in May. Just in fact during one of the wettest periods.
I substituted my rainfall figures (I am a few kilometres away) for those days and the total comes to 136 mm.

    1. I’ve swapped the chart to show 06-06 total rather that 00-24 totals.
That’s help boost the Plymouth total, but I still only received 91% of observations from their in May.
