Must try harder

Some of the highest gusts today occurred outside the yellow warning area for strong winds issued by the Met Office for today, notably at Aboyne (64 mph), Inverbervie (64 mph) and a 68 mph again at Capel Curig (aka the Welsh wind tunnel). The Met Office were quite right to flag up the possibility of high gusts as the result of lee waves occurring downwind of high ground across parts of southeast Scotland and northeast England, but they forgot to include northeast Scotland in their deliberations. They also ignored the Northern Isles in their warning, but then again they generally do, and with the rest of the evening to go, that’s where the strongest of the winds may still be to come. Let’s hope they do better with Thursday’s warning.
