I thought that I would try out the new WordPress compare widget with images of the North Atlantic SST anomalies with the latest from September 2nd 2020 and those of September 18th last year. The cold pool is still hanging on in the central Atlantic but displaced further southward, and a smaller one in the Norwegian sea to the northeast of Iceland has intensified a little with cooler waters eding down the coast of eastern Greenland. The anomalously warm waters in Baffin Bay are obviously the main talking point though; they have intensified and expanded southeast into the Labrador Sea. It’s noticeable too that the cold waters around the Gulf of St Lawrence have disappeared since last year.
