When the stars come out temperatures plummet

It may sound obvious but when skies clear as they have done now for a while on the Arctic ice cap and winds are light radiative cooling has rapidly dropped the air temperature over the last last few days on the Polarstern down to -25.0°C on the 13th. I’m not sure if the temperature sensors they are using for the SYNOP observations are still on the ship, but I would have thought by now they are coming from an AWS set up on the sea ice close by the ship. As far as I can see they are not making regular radiosonde ascents although I have looked for an ascent from DBLK on OGIMET so far I’ve found nothing – they probably just don’t have enough room for all those helium tanks and they are not going to risk making their own hydrogen.
